[Guild Wars 2] Kahlef dressed as the Mad Charr Doctor!

Mwahahahaha!

And right at the last minute I complete this month’s challenge from Ambermist, author extraordinaire of Tastes Like Battlechicken. As you can probably guess this month’s challenge is what kind of costume your character would wear for Halloween!

With Kahlef, pictured above, I tried to go for some mad doctor type-thing. But since the screenshot (or my choices of outfit) didn’t turn out so great, here is a bit more about the idea behind it:

A long time ago, there was a charr of the Iron Legion whose job was to fix up all the soldiers that got wounded in battle. He was so good at it that soldiers could go back to battle in a very short amount of time. Of course, that also made him the first choice to send the injured soldiers to whenever it was possible. Since a life of charr soldier is always a busy, dangerous one, that meant the good doctor was always busy healing someone.

One day he started to think “Why should I keep healing soldiers if they are only going to get hurt again and just end up here one more time? Why shouldn’t I just go one step further and make them better so they don’t get hurt so much?”. With those thoughts he began working. At first it was just small things, just some small metal bit here and there under the skin. Things that his patients would only notice because of the strange pains they felt, despite the doctor guarantees that they were fine and had not to worry about. Soon enough though he started to experiment more substituting limbs with entire mechanical creations (that didn’t work) or body fluids with his own alchemical creations that killed his patients. It didn’t took long for the powers-to-be in the Black Citadel to find out about those experiments. However when they did, it was already too late. The mad doctor had run away to never be captured. They say that to this day he is somewhere in the lower levels in the Black Citadel, hiding in forgotten places. The doctor stalks those places trying to capture any charr that dares to venture there… or even non-charrs. Pretty much any living thing that he can capture will be dragged back to his lab where he will “improve” on the subject. Some times the grotesque corpses of his failed experiments can be found in the poorest parts of the Black Citadel. Some times it is even hard to know what it used to be. But some times his experiments succeeds…. and if you walk around alone in the night you may see the Mad Doctor running with his new creation looking for more victims to experiment on.
And that is it for now. For everyone that celebrates it, I hope you are having a great Candy Day! For those who don’t, I hope you have a great Wednesday, with or without candy!

[Guild Wars 2] The big ding!

Now that I am 80 I can sleep all day, right?

So, yesterday I finally got Kahlef to level 80. I also got him to 400 leatherworker so I guess it is two big dings at  about the same time.

I admit I was pretty slow at leveling him as I took a few breaks from the game here and there or just went to play some alts. Regardless of the time I am pretty happy for getting to this point. Still I feel like  there is still a ton of things to do with him. To begin with, I only have 45% of the map explored with him. Heck, I haven’t even reached Orr itself yet. The closest I got was its neighboring zone, the Straits of Devastation. If Orr is anything like  that it will be both awesome and scary as hell at the same time. So, seeing Orr and getting World Map completion with Kahlef is one of my biggest goals right now. Another major goal with him is getting level 400 with his other crafting skill which is Huntsman. But I will get to those as I feel in the mood for it.

My other goals, in no specific order are:

Short term goals:

  • Raising all crafting skills to 400 (each alt has two, so I got all crafting skills covered)
  • Get Casimir to level 30 and finish his personal story that deals with the different orders so I can unlock the vigil banner

Medium to long range goals:

  • Get 100% map completion
  • Complete all the dungeons in story and explorable mode
  • Level up all my characters to 80
  • Finish all the personal stories
  • Get more character slots/bank slots/inventory slots. Preferably by buying the gems with in-game gold
  • Get all the minis. Gotta have ‘em all!
  • Get all the tameable pets for Casimir
  • Get the commander book. Because I can.
  • Complete all the jumping puzzles* Something else I forgot right now

Things I am dreaming about but can live without

  • Get all dyes
  • Get all the legendary weapons (or at least one!)
  • Something else I am forgetting

At the rate I am going it might take me about 60 years to complete this list. I might not even complete half of it before then! But you know what? It doesn’t really matter to me. Achieving stuff in MMORPGs is cool, and I can even feel regret about not achieving a few things in certain MMOs. But ultimately the journey is what matters to me. As long as I can have some good memories along that journey my time with the game will be worthwhile. And I already had many with Guild Wars 2. So let this ding to 80 to be just another step to many more great memories. :)

[Guild Wars 2] Kahlef the engineer

Ah, engineers! What is not to love about them? They get to use the guns, they have a ton of crazy weird inventions in the form of skills and most importantly, they have the monocles! The way I would describe the engineers would be as “the swiss knife” of the professions. You have a problem, they have some invention to deal with it.

The drawback of that is that it is too easy to try to pick just the cool toys and ignore other skills that would probably work better with your chosen play style.  Let me use myself as a practical example of what I am talking about. I chose pretty early on that I wanted my character to primarily use a flamethrower. Simply because I just love the flamethrower that much. My problem was the other utility skills though as I was thinking of them in individual terms and coolness factor, instead of thinking how each one would complement better my choice of weaponry. I was also completely ignoring the elixirs since I was thinking, in a very misguided way, that would be more for some one who wanted to play engineers more in a support role.

My skill load out varied as I leveled and it looked like certain skills were superior in themselves. My most used ones were usually the rifle turret, the thumping turret, the battering ram or the shrapnel mine (which is actually a charr racial skill). Mostly due to my thinking of trying to keep the mobs at a distance and having something to aid me in the killing. The problem with those skills is they work better for a build that can actually attack at long range which is not the case of the flamethrower which is a short range weapon. The end result was that as I progressed through the game the fights became increasingly rougher, specially in the personal story where I only had the NPCs to help me out.

So I decided it was time to do some research on engineers. After reading a bit I finally figured out the problem with my tactics and changed my skills accordingly. Now I am going more for a mobile build so I can let the mobs get just at the right distance from me and keep moving to keep that distance. To do that I have been using Elixir B and Slick Shoes. Elixir B adds Swiftness, Fury, Might and Retaliation so it also helps if an enemy gets close enough to get a few hits and killing things faster. While Slick Shoes will make the enemy fall down if they get too close. As for traits I am going for Firearms since it has a chance to give me Swiftness if I crit and add bleeding to the enemy plus a few other things down the line. I am also getting alchemy for Hidden Flask (Makes me a drink an Elixir B at 75% health). That is the bases of it now, I am still thinking about the rest of my traits. It is nice when a game gives you a lot of options and they all seem valid, making it a tough choice on what to pick. :)

Back to the subject at hand… At first it took some getting used to that kind of setup but now I think I am getting pretty comfortable with it and I am rarely dying these days. When that happens it is usually because I don’t have the space to move, there are way too many danged mobs for me to fights or I am just being stupid. Or all three. It can happen from time to time.

The charr story line so far has been pretty cool too. There has been some interesting choices that made me wonder if I wasn’t just making life more complicated for myself or making a poor choice for the legion. I won’t go into spoils about any of those but there is at least one I can talk about that isn’t a spoil, might not even be that important depending on how you see it but it was for me. During character creation as a charr you can choose a NPC that used to be your sparring partner in the legion. That character will be your first buddy during the personal storyline. I was bit torn on who to choose as they all seemed to be interesting in their own ways. Eventually I picked Maverick since I thought a melee character would supplement my engineer better. In the beginning I was unsure if that was a good idea and if I shouldn’t have picked up someone else with a more interesting personality. Well, after doing some personal story lines with him, I can say he earned his place in my warband. Not only did he save my tail a few times, his commentaries on any situation we are dealing with never stop cracking me up. It is just so different from what I would expect from a charr! :)

Hmmm… I think that is it for now about Kahlef. Next time, Rakuno the asura thief!
